Like some kind of Human Traffic soundtrack to 2020, Hospital's annual House Party VA has arrived. Fresh for a summer of social distancing, house parties and clandestine diversions, it's a soundtrack that will get any D&B head through the lockdown status, BBQs permitted. Top and tailed by the poppy, liquid, sample based and acoustic sessions of both Villem & Leo Wood's "We Had A Sing" and Whiney's "Better With You", find playful aggro in MC LowQui's "Middle Finger" to some hyper fresh material in Degs' "Pressure Cooker". Aggy half time once more in tracks like "Saturn's Strings" with gnarly basslines in Voltage's "The Prophet" and Logistic's "Playing With Fire" bringing the heat.

Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P's Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine EP. Our pick of a strong bunch is the tough, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is also impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore provides vocals on the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness. This digital edition also features a fine IPG rework of "Still We Are" that turns the track into a bass-heavy, spaced-out nu-disco epic.

Aku Aku Permanent Vacation Germany

Thanks to a string of rock-solid releases on Toy Tonics and Slam City, amongst others, Rhode & Brown has proved to be one of the most reliable deep house duos of recent times. Here they prove their growing eclecticism via a superb EP for Permanent Vacation. Opener "Aku Aku" is superb, with the Munich-based duo cannily combining dreamy female vocal snippets, undulating acid lines, stirring chords and bubbly bass on a track that blurs the boundaries between deep house and Afro-house. Elsewhere, "Not My Mind, Not My Planet" is a rushing chunk of arpeggio-driven piano house/Italo-disco fusion, "Break 2 Break" is another rushing retro-futurist peak-time workout laden with rave style piano riffs, and "Cliches & Romantic Arguments" is a Tuff City Kids style chunk of synth-heavy Balearic house warmth.

Cr2 Records presents the 2020 edition of Ibiza Underground. which features some of the label's biggest house and techno tracks this year. Getting straight down to business with Abel Ramos & Sansixto's tough rolling "Hola Mi Amor", the deep latin tribal groove of Uner & Coyu's remix of WWW's "Relaxx" and Saved chief Nic Fanciulli's emotive rework of Ito And Star's "Sudoko Kid". Elsehwre, British upstart My Cat Snoop gets deep into the groove on "Yo Mama" (extended mix), Paolo Mojo's tech house epic "Alininha" gets a funked-up perspective by Edu Imbernon, and you might remember when boss man Mark Brown teamed up with Steve Mac on "Bells Of Brighton" a little while back? Well that one gets an uplifting summer reinterpretation by Dutch legend 2000 & One.

Stay Out All Night Rekids

Matt Edwards departs from the script for his latest Radio Slave material. Taking influence from old school hardcore and a cut and paste production approach, on "Stay Out.." he delivers twitchy, good-time break beats that are full of hip-hop and soulful vocal samples. It's quite a departure for the creator of linear techno tracks like "Grindhouse" and "Another Club". On "Wait A Minute", Edwards returns to the techno realm; while still containing a repetitive vocal sample that intones the track's title, the rattling percussion, tough kicks and driving rhythm all come together to form a deadly effective big room techno track.

Piano Drop Running Back Germany

Alan Dixon, who's resident DJ at Savage in London, returns to Gerd Janson's Running Back with an EP that's unsurprisingly long on keys action. 'Acid Drop' gets the ball rolling, opening with a squelchy, early 80s-sounding synth bassline before unleashing a deluge of hands-in-the-air rave/Italo-house pianos from around the two-minute mark. The accompanying Swimming Mix tones down the 80s bass and adds a shimmering synth top line, giving the track something of a Balearic prog feel, while elsewhere 'Poye Loco' is a druggy, hazy nu-disco chugger and 'Rudy's Selector' is a midtempo, contemplative piece, both also heavily laced with piano.
